Single Written Form Update - Important.

The report of the Commission appointed to assist us with the process towards a Single Written Form of Cornish for use in schools and public life recommended a new compromise spelling based upon existing compromise forms, Kernowak Standard and Kernewek Dasunys together with Kemmyn.

The SWF has now been decided upon and a talk was given about it at Penseythen in Newquay last weekend. Whilst this may not be what we were given to believe it would be from the above statement at the conference (this new form has been called Kemmyn Lite by several people). This is now the Official Form.

It is now up to us to more forward and forget the past and use the official spelling, in either the main or  side forms to promote the language as a whole. This means forgetting about the past and our differences. This also includes not singing extremely silly songs at the penseythen having a dig at the 'opposition'. I'm not saying who it was, or anymore about it but lets just say it won't win any prizes. It also, i'm sad to report, does not include childish slogans about the 'opposition' on tee-shirts. What is the sound of one linguist clapping I wonder? Hmmmm. Never funny.

The time has come to grow up.

Books in Cornish

Our online Polls have been running for well over a year now and there are clear indications as to favoured publications in Cornish. Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings. Whilst the Bible is important to many, the future of the Language needs to be insured by publishing other books. The Bible is no longer the important book it once was in society, and many Cornish speakers are not Christians (according to our survey only 43% are Christian, the majority do not belong to any of the major organised religions). However, the complete Beatrix Potter in a quality publication would be extremely desirable. The whole area of publications cannot be underestimated, 19% of speakers / people interested are between 19 and 25, 15% are between 26 and 35, 25% are between 36 and 45, whilst 38% are over 46. This means we are failing to attract enough younger people and without them the Language cannot survive. They won't be interest in reading about Adam and Eve, more The Shining by Stephen King or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
